Coinbase tracing aided UK police in Shoreditch robbery case
Coinbase detected a customer under duress during a Shoreditch robbery, traced about £1,900 in crypto across wallets, alerted UK police and helped secure five convictions.
Coinbase’s monitoring systems detected signs of coercion during a robbery in Shoreditch and helped UK investigators trace cryptocurrency and secure five convictions.
The attack took place last July. A 36-year-old man from Hertfordshire was confronted by four men during a night out in Shoreditch, east London. The group forced him to his home, detained and assaulted him, and pressured him to access financial accounts, including his Coinbase account.
As the attackers tried to move assets off the exchange, Coinbase’s systems flagged activity consistent with a customer under duress and classified the incident as an emergency. The exchange alerted UK police while the incident was still unfolding.
Investigators, working with Coinbase’s Global Intelligence team, traced roughly £1,900 (about $2,548) in cryptocurrency and additional fiat funds across multiple addresses and accounts. Public blockchain records were used to map transactions and connect wallet activity to individuals involved in the case. Evidence from the tracing was presented at St Albans Crown Court.
The case ended with five convictions. Charges included conspiracy to rob, kidnapping, false imprisonment and money laundering. The Global Intelligence team provided analysis tied to a suspect who held a Coinbase account and assisted investigators during court proceedings.
Brian Armstrong posted on X: “Our investigations team identified an on-going crime, and used blockchain forensics to trace the criminals, leading to five convictions.” Paul Grewal posted on X: “Blockchains allowed us to spot and trace their actions in real time as it was happening.”
Coinbase wrote that public ledger visibility allowed investigators to review transaction histories faster than some traditional banking processes. The company also said it plans further upgrades to monitoring systems and to continue partnerships with law enforcement.
