Coinbase: On-chain Economy Hits ‘Escape Velocity’

Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong wrote the on-chain economy has reached ‘escape velocity,’ citing a tenfold rise in Base stablecoin transactions, a 55% jump in USDC held and growing AI payments.

Coinbase published first-quarter 2026 results on May 7 and CEO Brian Armstrong wrote on X that the on-chain economy has reached “escape velocity.” The company reported a tenfold year-over-year increase in stablecoin transaction volume on Base and a 55% rise in average USDC balances held in Coinbase products during the quarter.

The company highlighted automated agents executing transactions, which it calls agentic finance, as an expanding area. Coinbase cited forecasts that such agents could handle $3 trillion to $5 trillion in transactions by 2030. The firm reported that more than 90% of on-chain agentic stablecoin transaction volume in the quarter occurred on Base and that over 99% of on-chain agentic commerce used USDC.

Other trading and product metrics rose in the quarter. Derivatives trading volume increased 169% year over year. Coinbase said its prediction markets produced more than $100 million in annualized revenue in March after two full months live. The company also noted stablecoin market capitalization at $305 billion in the first quarter and said it saw customer asset inflows alongside gains in spot and derivatives market share.

Armstrong set out three priorities for 2026: expand the Everything Exchange offering, grow stablecoins and payments, and increase on-chain activity. He wrote, “There’s a generational shift happening, and Coinbase is uniquely positioned to capture it,” and added that the next frontier is “agentic and on Coinbase.”

Coinbase Global Inc. operates a retail and institutional cryptocurrency exchange and offers custody, staking and blockchain infrastructure services. Base is the company’s Ethereum Layer 2 network intended to lower costs and increase transaction speed. USDC is a dollar-pegged stablecoin issued by Circle and widely used for on-chain payments and commerce.
