Coinbase, Checkout.com enable USDC and USDT for 1,000+ merchants

Coinbase Payments lets Checkout.com merchants accept USDC and USDT while continuing to settle transactions in U.S. dollars across more than 1,000 enterprise customers.

On June 2, Coinbase announced that Checkout.com will enable eligible merchants across its network of more than 1,000 enterprise customers to accept USD Coin (USDC) and Tether (USDT) stablecoins via Coinbase Payments while continuing to settle transactions in U.S. dollars. The integration is designed so merchants can add stablecoin options without changing existing Checkout.com checkout systems.

The technical connection is powered by Coinbase Payments and uses acceptance APIs to manage buyer and merchant flows. Merchants can enable stablecoin payments through the same Checkout.com interface they already use, without a separate crypto integration. Checkout.com settlement rails will handle conversion to U.S. dollars so merchants do not need to manage custody or currency conversion directly.

Coinbase said Coinbase Payments runs on regulated infrastructure operating in nearly 50 countries and pointed to more than 14 years of custody experience as part of the offering. Checkout.com merchants will be able to access the capability through their existing Checkout.com accounts.

The integration targets markets where card access is uneven, local currencies are volatile, or consumers already hold digital dollars, offering an additional payments channel alongside cards, bank transfers and digital wallets.

Coinbase cited Visa data showing stablecoin transaction volume reached $10.2 trillion over the prior 12 months, an increase of 63% year over year.

In the announcement, Coinbase wrote, “Stablecoins are becoming part of everyday commerce.”

Coinbase and Checkout.com did not provide projected merchant uptake figures or a timeline for broad availability beyond the initial announcement. Coinbase noted merchant and consumer adoption will determine whether USDC and USDT move closer to routine online payment flows.
