Coinbase lets businesses accept USDC from AI agents
Coinbase will enable businesses to accept USDC from autonomous AI agents via its x402 HTTP payment standard and launched AI trading tools plus a developer SDK.
Coinbase announced Thursday that Coinbase Business users can accept USDC payments from autonomous AI agents using the x402 payment standard. The company also introduced AI trading tools and a developer software development kit to connect agents to payments and trading.
The x402 protocol, first introduced by Coinbase in May 2025, moves stablecoin payments over standard web protocols so software agents, applications and APIs can initiate and settle transactions. USDC is a dollar-pegged stablecoin issued by Circle and widely used across crypto platforms.
The new trading tools give businesses and developers the ability to monitor orders, access live market data and trigger actions based on predefined conditions. The SDK is designed to help engineers build applications that connect AI agents to payments and trading workflows.
Coinbase described the set of products as support for an emerging “agentic economy,” where AI agents make payments, manage finances and complete tasks on behalf of people and organizations. The company reported that agent-generated traffic recently exceeded human traffic on documentation pages for Base, its Ethereum Layer 2 network.
By routing payments over HTTP, x402 is intended to let software agents initiate transfers without the manual steps used in human-facing checkout flows. The company said the change aims to simplify integration for developers building programmatic payment functions.
Coinbase did not provide specific rollout dates for all features beyond the business-facing payments capability. The company said x402 has been publicly described since May 2025 and that the new trading tools and SDK are available now to users of its business and developer offerings.
Industry interest in using stablecoins and blockchain rails for machine-to-machine payments has grown as firms explore ways for AI services to pay for data, services and subscriptions automatically. Several exchanges and payment firms are creating APIs and standards to support programmatic payments for autonomous software.
