Guillén is a partner at BakerHostetler and a co-founder of its blockchain practice. From 2009 to 2011, she served as legal counsel in the SEC’s Office of General Counsel. She later worked with former SEC Chair Harvey Pitt, advising clients on navigating regulatory challenges posed by the SEC.
Her candidacy has garnered informal support from blockchain and crypto companies. This backing stems from her extensive experience within the SEC and her work defending blockchain startups and traditional financial firms on Wall Street.
Current SEC Chair Gary Gensler has started referring to his tenure in the past tense. He is expected to step down before Donald Trump’s inauguration on January 20, 2025.

Historically, SEC chairs have stepped aside when a new administration enters the White House, avoiding outright dismissal.
Speculation about the next SEC Chair began in July 2024, following Trump’s promise to remove Gensler from his position. However, no candidates have been officially confirmed so far.
Other potential contenders include Daniel Gallagher and Hester Peirce, affectionately known as “Crypto Mom.”
