Bitcoin tests $75K; $137M liquidated, $85K possible
Bitcoin repeatedly tested $75,000 on April 16, prompting about $137 million in liquidations as it traded near $74,200; an analyst forecasts $85,000 by late April.
Bitcoin repeatedly tested the $75,000 level on April 16, trading near $74,200 by 1:30 p.m. EST after a volatile session that left its market capitalization around $1.48 trillion.
The token crossed $75,000 several times on Wednesday evening and again before midnight but failed to hold those gains. Price swings continued into the next day, with a drop to about $74,300 before a rally back toward $75,000. An intraday low near $73,309 was followed by a quick surge that brought the price close to $75,000 between 9:30 a.m. and 12:15 p.m. EST, and the market turned down again by early afternoon.
Data provider Coinglass recorded roughly $70 million in liquidated long positions and about $67 million in liquidated shorts during the 24-hour period, for total liquidations near $137 million. Coinglass reported that 8,061 traders were liquidated, 24-hour volatility exceeded 2.94%, and the largest single liquidation was $9.7 million.
Traders cited several factors behind the rapid shifts in buying and selling, including potential talks involving the U.S. and Iran, weaker-than-expected U.S. jobless claims and continued inflows into bitcoin exchange-traded funds.
Shawn Young, chief analyst at MEXC Research, linked recent price action to how markets are pricing geopolitical uncertainty and ongoing negotiations. He said that if negotiations progress to a resolution and no major disruptive events occur, bitcoin could reclaim $85,000 by the end of April, and that recent purchases-more than 250,000 bitcoin acquired in the past 30 days-reflect increased investor accumulation. He also warned that complications in talks or unexpected events could reverse recent gains.
Bitcoin entered April after finishing the first quarter in the red. Market participants will watch price moves in the coming weeks for signs of whether short-term volatility will give way to sustained gains or renewed selling pressure.
