A16z-linked wallet amasses $192M in HYPE; early whale exits
An onchain address tied to Andreessen Horowitz built about 3.9M HYPE ($192.6M) since April 14 while a genesis-era holder sold 1.5M HYPE, realizing roughly $95M.
An onchain wallet that analysts link to venture firm Andreessen Horowitz accumulated about 3.9 million HYPE tokens worth roughly $192.6 million from April 14 to the present, according to blockchain tracker Lookonchain. The address amassed the position at an average price near $49.40 per token and added about 226,121 tokens in a single day this week.
The accumulation moved the wallet into the ranks of Hyperliquid’s largest external holders. HYPE reached an all-time high of $67.24 during the period. Andreessen Horowitz has not confirmed ownership of the wallet; the association is based on onchain funding patterns identified by analysts.
At the same time, a genesis-era Hyperliquid holder sold 1.5 million HYPE. The sale was worth about $98.2 million at current prices and realized an estimated $95 million gain for the seller. Onchain records show that wallet received 819,335 HYPE in the genesis distribution and later purchased 676,709 additional tokens for about $2.9 million, or roughly $4.29 each.
Before executing the sale, the genesis-era address withdrew 500,000 HYPE, a transaction pattern commonly seen prior to liquidations. The seller’s low cost basis stems from the genesis allocation and the small later purchase price.
Market mechanics around HYPE have included both large institutional accumulation and sizable sales by early holders. Data show that leveraged positions have been opened and closed around the token, indicating margin activity in the market.
HYPE is structured to capture value from Hyperliquid’s fee stream. Grayscale has estimated that fee stream at roughly $800 million annually. Reported buying from institutional investors, including Grayscale and Galaxy, has coincided with the recent price gains.
The recent activity recorded onchain shows large new purchases occurring alongside profit-taking by long-standing holders, and those transactions coincided with rapid price movement in HYPE.
