25 BTC Casascius Coin Redeemed, Tied to Noah Doe Case

A 25 BTC Casascius coin minted Nov. 1, 2011 was redeemed at block 953,022 from wallet 1Q2x5973gcdz7YMv84b4zVycWcbGdUkbeM, listed as address No. 38,953 in Noah Doe v. John Does.

Onchain records show a 25 BTC Casascius physical coin created in November 2011 was spent at block 953,022. The transaction moved funds from wallet 1Q2x5973gcdz7YMv84b4zVycWcbGdUkbeM, which appears as address No. 38,953 in the New York Supreme Court case Noah Doe v. John Does 1–39,069.

The physical coin was one of the metal Casascius pieces produced by Mike Caldwell. The underlying address received its first funding on Nov. 1, 2011, when bitcoin traded at about $3.32 per coin, giving the 25 BTC loaded onto the coin a nominal value near $83 at that time. The address showed no onchain activity for roughly 14 years before the spend at block 953,022.

Noah Doe v. John Does 1–39,069 is a New York Supreme Court proceeding in which a pseudonymous petitioner seeks ownership under the state’s lost-and-found statutes of 39,069 long-inactive bitcoin addresses. The petitioner’s filing alleges the addresses together hold an estimated 3.8 million BTC and contends the addresses have been abandoned after long inactivity and lack of response to public notices. A court-ordered stay is currently in place while the judge reviews an amicus brief arguing New York’s lost-property laws do not apply to digital assets or blockchain addresses.

Blockchain analysts identified earlier on June 7 a separate movement of about 1,878.57 BTC from an address linked to the Noah Doe filing. The spend at block 953,022 adds to a series of onchain transactions tied to addresses named in the litigation. Onchain records are public and show only that keys were used to move funds; they do not record the identity or motive of the party that signed the transactions.

Redeeming a Casascius coin requires access to the coin’s embedded private key or a record of that key. The recent transaction indicates those credentials were used for the 25 BTC piece associated with address No. 38,953. The court’s stay halts litigation steps but does not affect public blockchain activity or the ability of key holders to move funds onchain.
