XRP Ledger Hits 1M AI-Agent Transactions; Ripple Builds Tools

The XRP Ledger has recorded more than 1 million transactions initiated by autonomous software agents, and Ripple has released developer tools intended to let those agents pay for digital services with XRP or the RLUSD stablecoin.

J. Ayo Akinyele, head of engineering at RippleX, posted on X on July 21 noting the milestone and describing the XRPL AI Starter Kit. The kit offers code and documentation to connect agents to wallets, execute payments, use escrow and handle cross-currency transfers. It supports both XRP and RLUSD for on-chain settlements of APIs, data feeds and computing services.

Ripple has joined the Linux Foundation-backed x402 Foundation and added support for the x402 protocol. The protocol builds on the internet’s 402 Payment Required response: a service can send an agent a price and payment instructions, the agent submits an on-chain payment and receives verification, then retries the service request without opening a billing account or entering card information.

On-chain features of the XRP Ledger are cited as part of the use case. Akinyele noted that the ledger can provide confirmed payment results in roughly three to five seconds. Developers can add SourceTags, transaction memos and WebSocket monitoring to identify agent-driven payments, audit activity and respond to anomalous behavior.

Potential uses described by Ripple and participants include automated purchases of cloud computing, market data and API calls as agents run multi-step workflows. Ripple is also taking part in Mastercard’s AI payments initiative, which is testing how autonomous systems can settle invoices and acquire computing resources while operating within preset permissions.

Participants say the market remains in development. Further testing will focus on commercial transaction volume, the number of unique users and how well security and permissioning controls prevent fraud and enforce policy.

Akinyele wrote on X: “When I think about where agentic payments are today, it reminds me of the early days of cloud infrastructure.” He added: “Crossing 1M agentic transactions on the XRPL is an exciting milestone, but I believe we’re still in the early stages of what’s possible.”
