X is testing Smart Cashtags to track crypto and stock prices

X is preparing an update for its more finance-focused users: the platform is developing Smart Cashtags, an expanded version of the familiar ticker tags that start with the $ symbol. The idea is that these tags will act as quick cards showing data on cryptocurrencies and stocks right in the feed.

Editor’s note: This story was updated with Cashtags search data from X Product Lead.

UPDATE: Nikita Bier, X Product Lead and Solana Ecosystem Advisor, published data on the most searched Cashtags from December 1, 2025, to January 14, 2026. Top 10: Bitcoin miner IREN, Tesla, AST SpaceMobile, BTC, Ondas Holdings, XRP, GameStop, AI firm Nebius, Opendoor, and ETH. Crypto assets (BTC, XRP, ETH) captured three slots, with tech stocks and AI infrastructure filling the rest – reflecting X users’ focus on high-volatility sectors.

X’s head of product, Nikita Bier, said on January 11 that the company wants to roll the feature out publicly in February 2026.

Instead of jumping to search, users would be able to tap $BTC, $ETH, or a company ticker and immediately see a real-time price chart. For crypto assets, Smart Cashtags are also expected to pull in smart-contract information, making it easier to distinguish the “right” token from lookalikes (or outright fakes). Bier also mentioned a “mentions” section where X plans to surface recent posts about an asset as well as news tied to the companies or teams behind a project.

In promo materials that circulated online, Buy and Sell buttons appeared next to the chart. That has fueled speculation about trading inside the app, but it’s still unclear whether X would execute trades itself or simply route users to partners.

X has tried similar ideas before. In December 2022, when the platform was still called Twitter, it added price charts in search for Bitcoin and Ether, along with a selection of stocks and ETFs. The integration used TradingView data and included a “View on Robinhood” link, but the feature was later removed. In spring 2023, the platform also expanded crypto price displays through a partnership with eToro, directing users to the broker’s instrument page.

This new attempt fits with Elon Musk’s broader financial plans for X. In 2024, X’s payments lead described the future product as a wallet for user-to-user transfers and crypto purchases.

The Smart Cashtags announcement came shortly after renewed debate over whether the platform is “throttling” crypto content. Musk said he would make the recommendation algorithm public within a week, while the product team continues to gather feedback ahead of launch.
