U.S. Transfers $770 Million in Bitcoin to Coinbase Prime

The U.S. government transferred 9,261 Bitcoin worth about $770 million to Coinbase Prime, including funds tied to the Bitfinex hack, Binance seizures and possible new seizures.

The U.S. government transferred 9,261 Bitcoin to a Coinbase Prime account over two days. The assets were linked to cryptocurrency seizures from earlier hacks and law enforcement cases.

Blockchain data reviewed by Galaxy Research showed that about half of the Bitcoin came from funds recovered from the Bitfinex hackers. Another portion came from cryptocurrency seized from Binance.

An additional 2,456 Bitcoin came from previously unidentified holdings. The funds were sent to a U.S. government seizure address linked to Coinbase Prime and may represent new law enforcement seizures, according to Galaxy Research.

The U.S. Marshals Service has used Coinbase Prime as the custody provider for seized digital assets since 2024.

Earlier transfers from wallets labeled as belonging to the U.S. government led to speculation that authorities could sell some of the Bitcoin. A March 2025 executive order signed by President Donald Trump directed that seized Bitcoin should not be sold and should instead become part of the U.S. Strategic Bitcoin Reserve.

In July, the government transferred about $297 million in Bitcoin and Ether to Coinbase Prime. Those assets also came from cryptocurrency seizures tied to major U.S. law enforcement cases.

The U.S. Marshals Service and the U.S. Department of Justice were asked for comment on the latest transfers.
