Trump rules out pardon for Sam Bankman-Fried

Trump rejects clemency for Bankman-Fried despite parents' push

In a NYT interview, President Donald Trump ruled out a pardon for former FTX CEO Sam Bankman-Fried, who is serving a 25-year federal sentence for fraud.

President Donald Trump, in a NYT interview, ruled out granting clemency to Sam Bankman-Fried, the former FTX chief serving a 25-year federal sentence for fraud tied to the collapse of the exchange.

He addressed the subject while explaining why he would not use his pardon power for Sean “Diddy” Combs, who faces prostitution-related charges, and then listed other figures he does not plan to pardon, including former New Jersey senator Robert Menendez and Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro.

Bankman-Fried has appeared on conservative media in recent months. Despite those appearances, Trump ruled out clemency. His parents, former Stanford Law School professors Barbara Fried and Joseph Bankman, have been meeting with lawyers and people in Trump’s orbit in an effort to secure a pardon for their son.

Combs and Bankman-Fried share an appellate attorney, Alexandra Shapiro, and were housed in the same dormitory at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn.

Trump has granted pardons in several notable cases. They include former Honduran president Juan Orlando Hernandez, convicted of importing cocaine into the United States. In the crypto sector, he has pardoned former Binance CEO Changpeng “CZ” Zhao, Silk Road founder Ross Ulbricht and the co-founders of BitMEX.

As we covered previously, President Donald Trump granted a full pardon to Binance founder Changpeng “CZ” Zhao after a months-long lobbying push in Washington that involved Trump Jr. ally Ches McDowell, according to federal filings. The White House described the action as clemency restoring Zhao’s legal standing, subject to regulatory reviews.
