Trader nets $8.47M from World Cup prediction bets

A trader earned $8.47 million in one day by placing multimillion-dollar wagers on Sweden–Japan and Ecuador–Germany in on-chain prediction markets; transactions were visible on the blockchain.

A prediction-market trader recorded an $8.47 million net gain in a single day by placing large wagers on two World Cup matches. The trades were executed on on-chain prediction markets and were publicly visible on the blockchain.

Blockchain records indicate the trader created a new wallet the day before placing the bets. The trader placed $7.19 million on Sweden to win and on Japan not to win in the Sweden–Japan match. That fixture finished 1-1, producing a payout of about $4.38 million on that position. The same wallet then staked $2.26 million on Ecuador to beat Germany. The combined result for the day produced a net profit of roughly $8.47 million.

The World Cup has produced several large, publicly traceable swings in these markets. One bettor converted a $400,000 wager into a $4.7 million payout by correctly betting that Spain would not beat Cape Verde, a match that finished in a draw. Another trader lost about $4.2 million across two positions after bets on the Netherlands over Japan and Belgium over Egypt failed to produce the expected wins.

Much of the sports betting activity has concentrated on the largest on-chain prediction market and its competitors. Earlier this year the sector recorded a period of high volume, with prediction markets logging tens of billions of dollars in monthly trading as users placed wagers on sports, politics and economic events.

Separately, the largest on-chain prediction market reported a security incident in which hackers stole roughly $3 million from users through a compromised third-party vendor. The platform reported it contained the breach and is refunding affected users.

Whether the $8.47 million haul is the largest single-day payout of the tournament will depend on future match outcomes and additional high-stakes wagers placed as the World Cup continues.
