TON to rebrand as Gram; no token swap after Telegram takeover

Telegram will relabel Toncoin (TON) as Gram after assuming operational control; the rebrand needs no token swap and is expected to take about three weeks.
The Open Network announced plans to relabel Toncoin (TON) as Gram (GRAM) after Telegram assumed operational control of the blockchain. The relabeling will not require any token swap, bridge, claim, migration or conversion, and is expected to take about three weeks.
Telegram founder Pavel Durov wrote on Telegram that Gram was the currency name in TON’s first white paper and described the relabeling as a return to the project’s roots: “We’re returning to our roots and starting a new chapter.”

Gram was the planned token name in 2018 before Telegram halted its initial coin offering in 2020 following an enforcement action by U.S. regulators. The network then continued under the TON Foundation and an independent community until Telegram took a leading operational role in May.
The relabel is listed as the fourth stage of a roadmap called “Make TON Great Again.” Earlier stages this year included a protocol upgrade to Catchain in April to increase transaction speed, a reduction in transaction fees, and Telegram’s operational takeover.
A governance vote on the name change began Monday and voting is ongoing. The network’s governance page shows about 1.8 million TON, roughly 80% of votes cast so far, pledged in favor. The governance notice states that all balances, addresses, contracts and positions will remain unchanged and that no technical work is required from holders or developers.
Markets reacted to the announcement. TON’s price rose about 15% from roughly $1.95 to above $2.25 in late trading on the day of the announcement, then eased to about $2.07 the following morning. The token remains below its June 2024 peak near $8.25.
Telegram and network developers stated the relabeling is intended to prepare the token for integration inside Telegram as a native currency for payments, mini-apps, digital ownership and AI agents. The team expects the public-facing name change to complete within the three-week window if the governance approval threshold is met.
