Bob Jones University student Vitaliy Bondarchuk spent more than 100 hours 3D printing a modular prosthetic arm for his 7-year-old sister, Bella.
Vitaliy Bondarchuk, an engineering student at Bob Jones University, spent over 100 hours 3D printing a modular prosthetic arm for his 7-year-old sister, Bella. He developed the device while living in a dorm, and Bella now uses the prosthetic in everyday activities.
Bondarchuk worked on the project for about four months. He ran repeated cycles of digital modeling, 3D printing and physical testing. Much of the effort focused on fit and comfort; small changes in shape were tested and an anti-friction lining was added where the device contacts skin.
The prosthetic uses a single socket with interchangeable end attachments. Bondarchuk produced attachments that help Bella hold a paintbrush and steady playing cards. The socket accepts different tools so a single limb can serve multiple tasks and new attachments can be designed without rebuilding the arm.
Bondarchuk prepared technical documentation alongside the hardware. The build addressed a common challenge in pediatric prosthetics, where families often face high costs and limited device options that do not adapt quickly as a child grows.
Bella wears the prosthetic daily. The project earned Bondarchuk top academic marks at his school. After graduation, he joined GE Vernova’s Operations Management Leadership Program and continues to design and print new attachments with help from his older brother, who is also an engineer.
Pediatric prosthetic fit and control can depend on small dimensional changes. Bondarchuk used iterative 3D printing and the modular attachment concept to refine fit, add functions and make future adjustments simpler.
