Stripe buys OpenRouter for $7 billion, adds model routing

Stripe has agreed to acquire OpenRouter for $7 billion, adding a service that routes developer requests to multiple large language models. The deal transfers OpenRouter’s API, orchestration codebase and customer relationships into Stripe’s product lineup.

OpenRouter provides a single API endpoint that connects applications to models from different providers. The platform handles model selection, routing, rate limiting and usage tracking so applications can switch models or providers without changing client code.

The acquisition places OpenRouter’s technology inside Stripe’s developer products and payment flows. Model usage can be billed through existing Stripe payment and invoicing systems, allowing teams that use Stripe for payments to consolidate billing for model-driven features.

OpenRouter’s routing layer handles multiple model endpoints, fallback logic and selection rules. The platform includes dynamic routing that can use latency or cost signals, centralized rate limits and usage reporting. These capabilities let applications evaluate and change models without rewriting client logic.

Data handling and contractual terms are integration points for the acquisition. OpenRouter’s routing and telemetry capture signals about prompts, latencies and error rates; those data streams will be managed by Stripe after closing. Customers will receive updated terms of service, privacy and data-processing arrangements that reflect Stripe’s compliance posture. Enterprises with specific data-residency or model-auditing requirements will need to review any changes Stripe implements.

Model providers and third-party tooling that integrate with OpenRouter will work with Stripe on commercial agreements and technical requirements. Mechanisms that let developers choose between competing models will be governed by Stripe’s product and commercial priorities.
