Strike wins NY approvals to offer Bitcoin services statewide

Strike obtained a New York BitLicense and money transmitter license, enabling service in the state and completing its 50-state U.S. rollout.

Bitcoin payments company Strike secured a New York BitLicense and money transmitter license from the New York State Department of Financial Services. The approvals allow the firm to offer its Bitcoin services to residents and businesses in New York and complete its rollout across all 50 U.S. states.

Strike, operated by Chicago-based Zap Solutions, enables users to buy and sell Bitcoin through linked bank accounts, debit cards, or wire transfers. Features include automated recurring purchases and price-triggered orders, the option to convert portions of paychecks into BTC, and the ability to pay bills from Bitcoin balances.

The company states that all Bitcoin and cash balances are held 1:1 and are not lent or used for corporate purposes. Under NYDFS oversight, Strike will be subject to periodic audits, capital requirements, and cybersecurity examinations.

In a statement, founder and CEO Jack Mallers called the approval “a defining milestone” for Strike and added: “With our BitLicense, we can now bring that mission to New York, the global center of finance.”

New York’s BitLicense program, introduced in 2015, requires crypto firms to maintain anti-money laundering controls, meet cybersecurity standards, hold sufficient capital, and submit to ongoing regulatory oversight. Companies generally need a BitLicense or an equivalent trust charter to serve New York residents.

In recent years, the NYDFS has granted licenses to a limited group of crypto firms, including Anchorage Digital, MoonPay, and Bullish.

Mallers previously led the Lightning-focused startup Zap, which launched Strike as a consumer-facing Bitcoin financial services platform. With New York added, the company reports its U.S. expansion is complete, alongside operations in several international markets.
