Steve Jobs’ ‘Why are you here?’ question guides hiring

Onstage at the 2010 D8 conference, Steve Jobs described his standard interview opener: “Why are you here?” He used the prompt to invite candidates to explain their personal aims and motivation.

Jobs presented the question as a way to observe thought process and enthusiasm rather than to trap applicants. He preferred answers that named specific personal goals over generic statements about helping the company, linking focused ambition to the ability to take on difficult projects.

Jeff Haden, an author and former manager, recommends that interviewers treat concrete personal goals as more revealing than prepared responses. Haden contrasts targeted aims with lines like “I want to help the company grow,” which he says rarely distinguish top candidates.

Jobs placed the question within a broader management approach that emphasized results and punctuality. He sometimes started meetings on time without late senior executives to make clear his expectations for execution.
