Sophon sets Nov. 25 deadline before mainnet shutdown
Sophon will begin shutting down its mainnet infrastructure and related websites on Nov. 25, giving users until then to withdraw assets and claim unpaid rewards.
Sophon will shut down key infrastructure and websites linked to its Ethereum layer-2 network on Nov. 25. Assets left on Sophon Chain after the deadline could become permanently inaccessible.
Users have been asked to withdraw Sophon (SOPH), Ether (ETH), USD Coin (USDC) and other assets before the shutdown. They should also claim any unpaid staking and Guardian rewards.
Sophon launched as a zero-knowledge-powered layer-2 network for consumer applications, including gaming, entertainment and artificial intelligence. In June, its developers announced plans to leave the network and move operations to Base, an Ethereum layer-2 blockchain.
The developers cited the cost of maintaining a standalone blockchain, saying it no longer justified the benefits. They plan to focus on consumer finance and artificial intelligence applications on Base.
Sophon raised $60 million through a node sale in 2024, following a separate $10 million funding round.
The shutdown follows a similar plan by Abstract, another consumer-focused Ethereum layer-2 network. Abstract’s developer, Igloo, announced on Oct. 6 that the network would close on Dec. 15 after incurring tens of millions of dollars in losses while supporting it.
