SEC adds tokenized securities to 2027 exam priorities

The SEC will examine tokenized securities as a high-risk area in its 2027 reviews of market infrastructure and clearing agencies. Cryptocurrencies are not a standalone priority.

The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission has added tokenized securities to its fiscal 2027 examination priorities for critical market infrastructure and clearing agencies. The priorities were released Friday.

Examinations under Regulation Systems Compliance and Integrity will cover emerging trends that could affect the security and reliability of major market infrastructure. The SEC listed tokenization, extended trading hours, quantum computing and “super intelligence,” the Trump administration’s term for artificial intelligence.

The agency also classified tokenization as a high-risk area for clearing-agency examinations. Those reviews will cover default management, securities lending and operational risks.

Tokenization is the process of representing an asset, such as a security, on a blockchain or another digital ledger. The SEC did not explicitly mention tokenization in its fiscal 2026 examination priorities.

The 2027 priorities follow efforts by traditional financial institutions and digital-asset companies to expand tokenized securities offerings. Earlier this month, a joint venture between crypto exchange OKX and Intercontinental Exchange filed to launch a platform offering tokenized shares in more than 60 U.S.-listed companies.

Cryptocurrencies are absent as a standalone examination category for the second consecutive year. The SEC last included a dedicated section on crypto assets in its fiscal 2025 priorities. Crypto-related activities may still fall within other areas covered by the regulator’s examinations.
