Ravencoin drops 20% after exploit risks blockchain rollback

Ravencoin’s RVN token fell about 20% after developers disclosed a consensus vulnerability that could force a blockchain rollback and reverse recent transactions.

Ravencoin’s RVN token fell roughly 20% after core developers disclosed a vulnerability this week that could require a rollback of the blockchain, reversing recent transactions and requiring nodes to restore an earlier ledger state.

Core developers and node operators reported the flaw affects consensus or transaction validation logic in the Ravencoin protocol. The disclosure prompted concern among miners, exchanges and token issuers because a rollback would alter recent block history and undo confirmed transfers.

A rollback would restore the ledger to a block height before the vulnerability could be exploited and then rebuild the chain from that point. That process can stop or reverse transactions users believed final and can create double-spend risk for holders of newly issued tokens or for merchants who accepted payments.

Market trading reacted immediately, with RVN falling about one-fifth as investors reassessed short-term risk. Node operators and miners monitored block propagation and transaction behavior while developers worked on a patch or other mitigations. Exchanges and custodial services commonly suspend deposits and withdrawals if they detect network instability.

Responses under consideration include emergency software releases, coordinated updates for node operators and, if required, a coordinated hard fork to implement a fix. A rollback or hard fork requires adoption by a substantial portion of miners and running nodes; the scope of any rollback depends on when and how the vulnerability could be exploited.

Ravencoin launched in 2018 as an open-source fork of Bitcoin code and uses RVN for asset issuance and transfers. Developers reported they are investigating the issue and preparing guidance for node operators and service providers; network participants are awaiting an official patch and instructions on how affected transactions would be handled.
