Raiffeisen Opens Crypto Trading to 18 Million Customers
Raiffeisen, valued at $228 billion, has made cryptocurrency trading and custody available to its 18 million retail customers via its online and mobile platforms where allowed.
Raiffeisen has launched cryptocurrency services for its 18 million retail customers, making trading and custody available through the bank’s existing online and mobile channels in countries where local rules permit.
The offering, delivered by Raiffeisen’s retail-banking arm, allows customers to buy and sell major cryptocurrencies, view crypto holdings alongside traditional accounts and use custody solutions built on the bank’s regulated infrastructure. Access will depend on local approvals and investor suitability tests where required.
Bank officials said the roll-out followed internal work on compliance, anti-money-laundering controls and technical integration with regulated custody providers. Customers must complete standard onboarding, accept risk disclosures and meet the bank’s suitability checks before they can trade or hold crypto through their accounts.
Raiffeisen said the service will initially cover the most widely used cryptocurrencies and that product coverage will expand over time. The bank emphasized that crypto services are an optional feature and will not replace existing savings and investment products.
Analysts noted the rollout embeds direct crypto access into established banking rails and digital channels, which can simplify buying, custody and reporting for customers. The bank has linked transaction monitoring for crypto activity to its anti-fraud and anti-money-laundering systems and confirmed it will report crypto transactions in line with local regulatory requirements.
Raiffeisen has added educational materials and risk warnings to the onboarding process to inform customers about the volatility and risks associated with cryptocurrencies. The bank’s risk-management teams have implemented monitoring tools to oversee crypto transactions alongside other account activity.
The group’s 18 million customers are spread across multiple European countries, primarily in central and eastern Europe, where Raiffeisen has long-established retail operations. The $228 billion valuation cited by the bank reflects investor estimates and market metrics disclosed in recent public filings.
Raiffeisen’s launch follows broader activity in the banking sector, where several established lenders have tested or introduced digital-asset services for retail and institutional clients while coordinating product launches with legal and compliance teams to meet evolving regulatory frameworks.
