Polymarket files POLY token trademark applications in the United States

Polymarket filed trademark applications for POLY and $POLY on 5 February 2026, seeking U.S. protection for branding tied to a potential crypto token and related trading and payment services as the prediction market faces fresh legal challenges.

The applications, submitted by Polymarket parent Blockratize Inc. to the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, cover cryptocurrency services, financial trading platforms and blockchain-based payment systems. The filings describe services for providing a digital currency or digital token for use by members of an online community and reference crypto trading, financial exchange services and portfolio management.

The paperwork is the clearest public step yet linking Polymarket to a native token launch. In October, Polymarket chief marketing officer Matthew Modabber confirmed plans for a POLY token and an airdrop in an interview, while chief executive Shayne Coplan posted the POLY ticker alongside major crypto assets. People familiar with the company plans have previously said a token launch would likely come after Polymarket rebuilds its U.S. presence.

Polymarket has been working toward that goal. The company received approval from the Commodity Futures Trading Commission in November to operate domestically, after previously paying a $1.4 million penalty and leaving the U.S. market, a regulatory milestone that strengthens its case in the debate over is Polymarket legit. On Myriad, a prediction market owned by Decrypt parent company Dastan, traders have recently priced about a 30% chance that Polymarket announces its token before May 2026.

At the same time, the platform is fighting state-level pushback. A Nevada state court issued a temporary restraining order barring Polymarket from offering event-based contracts in the state, finding the activity likely violates Nevada gaming law. Polymarket later moved the case to federal court, arguing the state action conflicts with federal law, gaming attorney Daniel Wallach wrote. The trademark applications are pending examination. Polymarket did not respond to a request for comment.
