OpenAI’s only in-house ethicist departs; no replacement

OpenAI’s only employee with a formal title of ethicist has left the company and no replacement has been named, leaving the organization without a designated in-house ethics lead.

The departure removes the single staff member whose role was explicitly focused on ethics. Other OpenAI employees continue to work on safety, policy and alignment, but those roles are not labeled as the dedicated ethicist post that is now vacant.

OpenAI has described its governance and safety work as spread across multiple teams and supported by external consultations. The company’s safety and policy units handle research on model behavior, risk assessments and interactions with regulators and partners. The ethicist role had been positioned within that broader set of activities.

Responsibilities typically associated with an in-house ethicist include advising on bias and fairness, assessing social harms, guiding consent and data-use practices, and shaping internal review processes and external engagement. With the position unfilled, those duties would be managed by staff in other functions or by outside advisers.

Policymakers, researchers and civil society groups have been seeking clearer governance and accountability from large AI developers. Lawmakers in several jurisdictions are pursuing rules that would require firms to explain how ethical decisions are made and implemented.

Ethics roles at technology companies vary: some firms hire multiple ethicists or create formal review boards, while others assign ethical responsibilities across product, legal and policy teams. The presence of a single named ethicist at one of the largest AI research and deployment organizations had been a distinct feature of its internal structure. The vacancy remains unfilled and the company has not announced plans to appoint a successor.
