Mirae Asset Buys Korbit for $102M, Rebrands as Digital X

Mirae Asset Consulting closed a 141.4 billion won takeover of Korbit in July 2026, raising its stake to 97.15% and renaming the exchange Digital X after regulatory approval.

Mirae Asset Consulting completed a 141.4 billion won acquisition of Korbit in July 2026, increasing its ownership to 97.15% and rebranding the platform as Digital X following approval from South Korea’s Fair Trade Commission on July 9, 2026.

Mirae Asset initially acquired about 92% of Korbit and then purchased an additional 5.42%, bringing total ownership to 97.15%. Regulators said the deal was unlikely to limit competition, noting Korbit held roughly 0.5% of South Korea’s crypto trading market in 2025. Depending on the exchange rate used, the combined investment ranges from about $95 million to $102 million. Korbit was founded in 2013 and remains far smaller than domestic leaders in trading volume.

Mirae Asset said Korbit’s operating entity, customer deposits and core trading services will remain unchanged for now. Customer assets will continue to be kept separate under existing protection rules. The platform will operate under Korbit’s current licenses and user base while Mirae Asset integrates compliance and operational processes.

The rebranded exchange, Digital X, is part of Mirae Asset’s strategic plan called Mirae Asset 3.0. The firm plans to connect tokenized real-world assets, security token offerings, stablecoins and traditional securities on a single platform that includes investment research, investor education and institutional-grade compliance systems.

Park Hyeon-joo, Mirae Asset’s founder and global strategy officer, told employees the “X” represents “an uncharted future and the limitless possibilities created when different forms of value intersect and converge.” He emphasized trust and compliance, noting that “trust takes a lifetime to build but can collapse in an instant,” and described compliance as an absolute standard. Mirae Asset plans to deploy anti-money-laundering, know-your-customer and fraud-detection tools on the platform.

Mirae Asset has stated Digital X is not intended to overtake larger competitors by trading volume. The company positions the platform as infrastructure that combines its securities and asset management experience with Korbit’s digital-asset operations. The acquisition follows Mirae Asset’s launch of a Portfolio Service in Hong Kong aimed at integrating traditional and digital assets. Mirae Asset Financial Group reported about $1 trillion in client assets under management as of May 2026.

Full integration of tokenized real-world assets, security tokens and stablecoins remains a stated goal rather than a completed product. The pace and scope of those services will depend on forthcoming regulatory guidance in South Korea. For now, Digital X operates on Korbit’s existing foundation while Mirae Asset applies its regulated brokerage approach to the exchange.
