Japan’s Metaplanet tops 20,000 BTC with latest $112M purchase

Metaplanet, Japan’s largest Bitcoin treasury firm, has crossed the 20,000 BTC milestone after its latest purchase.
Metaplanet has purchased 1,009 BTC for ¥16.48 billion ($112 million) at an average price of ¥16.3 million ($102,600) per coin. Listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, the company now holds 20,000 BTC in total since launching its treasury program in December 2024.
According to BitcoinTreasuries.net, Metaplanet ranks as the world’s sixth-largest public holder of Bitcoin and the biggest corporate holder in Japan.
The company also issued 11.5 million new shares, fully acquired by investor Evo Fund for $65.7 million across two transactions. The proceeds gave Metaplanet immediate capital for debt reduction and further Bitcoin purchases, including the repayment of roughly $20.4 million in bonds.
Last week, Metaplanet announced plans to raise up to ¥130.3 billion ($880 million) through a public share offering in overseas markets. Shareholders will vote on the issuance of up to 555 million preferred shares, which could generate as much as ¥555 billion ($3.7 billion).
Metaplanet shares have fallen more than 50% since mid-June, making warrant exercises unattractive and limiting available liquidity. Analysts warn this could restrict the company’s ability to expand its Bitcoin holdings further.
Still, the latest acquisition underscores Metaplanet’s determination to grow its treasury despite equity market headwinds. If completed, the overseas share sale would represent one of the largest fundraising efforts ever undertaken by a Japanese company with a focus on cryptocurrency.
