MetaMask exits Lido validators amid security investigation

MetaMask is exiting Ethereum validators operated through Lido as a precaution while it investigates a security incident affecting part of its infrastructure.

MetaMask reported Wednesday that it was responding to an ongoing security threat within part of its infrastructure. The crypto wallet provider is working with external partners and security advisers but has not disclosed the nature of the incident.

The company has not identified any immediate threat to MetaMask wallets. It has not said how many validators are affected or whether any client funds were compromised.

The precautionary measures involve validators used in MetaMask’s non-custodial staking service. The service allows users to participate in Ethereum’s proof-of-stake network without operating validator infrastructure themselves.

Lido reported that MetaMask Staking had begun exiting its Ether validators from the Lido protocol on Wednesday to protect client assets. The final affected validators are expected to exit by the end of Oct. 7.

Ether held by those validators will return to the protocol gradually after the validators complete the exit, withdrawal and re-entry process. Will Shannon, a developer at Lido Finance, estimated that the process could take up to 45 days because of an extended queue for new validators entering the Ethereum network.
