Markets bet on Artemis II splashdown and postflight words

Users on prediction platforms Kalshi and Polymarket are placing bets on NASA’s Artemis II Pacific splashdown and on specific words they expect officials to use at the postflight news conference as the Orion crew capsule returns to Earth after a 10-day lunar flyby.

Kalshi vs Polymarket drew attention as the mission came to a close. Kalshi showed roughly $4,000 in volume across related event contracts. Traders there bought positions on whether NASA officials would say words such as “president” or “prime minister,” “radiation,” and “damage” during the postflight briefing. Polymarket listed several Moon-related contracts as the mission drew to a close.

Artemis II launched from Florida on April 1 with a four-person crew on a 10-day test flight that performed a lunar flyby. NASA expects the Orion spacecraft to reenter Friday evening and splash down in the Pacific around 12:07 a.m. UTC on Saturday.

Kalshi also ran a longer-horizon contract on whether NASA will conduct a crewed Moon landing, pricing a 63% chance of a landing before 2030 and a 41% chance before 2029. These contracts sit alongside other space-related markets that users have used to trade on a range of outcomes.

Prediction markets have drawn scrutiny for contracts tied to wars and other geopolitical events. Lawmakers and critics have raised concerns that some trades could reflect or enable insider information, prompting calls for clearer rules to address potential insider trading and ethical limits on betting about human conflict.

Artemis II follows the unmanned Artemis I mission in 2022 and is part of NASA’s phased plan toward a crewed lunar landing currently targeted for 2028. Market participants rely on timely official statements to resolve event contracts, so the splashdown and the postflight briefing are likely to determine several pending wagers.
