Malta regulator flags unlicensed crypto firm Distributex

Malta’s financial regulator warned on Aug. 17, 2026 that Distributex, also known as DX, operates in Malta without authorization and displays MLM and pyramid-scheme features.

The Malta Financial Services Authority published a warning on Aug. 17, 2026, identifying Distributex as an unlicensed cryptocurrency marketing entity operating in Malta. The group uses names including Distributex Limited and DX and maintains a website and a mobile application listed on the Apple App Store.

Investigators found local activity and recruitment efforts tied to the operation, including events described as “official employee meetings” and office locations in Birkirkara, Hamrun, Mosta and Hal Tarxien. The MFSA noted that none of the entities linked to the group is registered in Malta.

Under Malta’s Virtual Financial Assets framework, firms offering crypto-related services from or within Malta must be authorized by the regulator. The MFSA’s review concluded Distributex has never been approved to carry out regulated activities and therefore does not fall under Maltese supervisory protections.

The regulator highlighted specific features of Distributex’s operations that raised concern: participants were required to make mandatory financial contributions to join; the compensation structure included referral commissions tied to recruiting new members; and promised financial returns were linked to membership levels rather than the sale of identifiable products or services. The MFSA said those elements are commonly associated with high-risk multilevel marketing structures and pyramid schemes, while noting that such characteristics alone do not establish illegality.

The authority urged the public to verify whether a company appears on the MFSA’s official register before committing funds and to avoid providing money to unlicensed operations. The MFSA added that transactions with unregulated platforms leave consumers without the legal protections and remedies available under Maltese law.

The regulator also warned that some unauthorized operators use physical offices, organized recruitment events and app listings to create an appearance of legitimacy while avoiding regulatory oversight.
