Long-term holders’ flows signal bitcoin rally strength

Binance Research reports that the net change in Bitcoin held by long-term holders separates larger, longer rallies from short, fade-prone ones.

Binance Research reports that a single on-chain metric-the net change in Bitcoin held by long-term holders-distinguishes stronger rallies from weaker ones. Rallies preceded by accumulation by these holders tended to produce larger and more durable price gains, while rallies marked by distribution from those holders were likelier to fade.

The research team analyzed past market cycles and a range of on-chain indicators to isolate measures that correlated with rally performance. Long-term holders were defined as addresses that had not moved their coins for months and were grouped into a separate supply category. The study tracked changes in that category around multiple prior rally periods and compared outcomes for rallies where long-term holder supply rose versus those where it fell.

When the aggregate balance held by long-term addresses increased before a rally, subsequent price advances were generally larger and lasted longer. When long-term holder balances fell during a run-up, the price gains that followed tended to be smaller and more prone to reversal.

The report tested other common measures, including exchange inflows and outflows, realized price metrics and short-term trading volumes. While several indicators showed some correlation with price moves, the change in long-term holder supply was the clearest single partitioning metric for classifying rallies as strong or weak. The analysis noted that exchange flows and retail activity could amplify or dampen moves but did not consistently separate strong rallies from weak ones on their own.

Charts in the report show examples from prior cycles where rising long-term holder accumulation came before multi-month rallies and where long-term holder selling coincided with short-lived spikes. The timing of accumulation and distribution was highlighted: accumulation before a rally was associated with sustained buy-side pressure, while selling during a rally often coincided with a loss of momentum and subsequent pullbacks.

Binance Research framed the metric as a way to assess rally sustainability rather than a tool that predicts exact price levels. The report describes the measure as a structural indicator of supply dynamics, noting that changes in the holdings of low-turnover addresses alter available supply as demand shifts. The authors included methodology details and cautioned that market structure can change, new classes of participants can alter behavior, and external macro events can override on-chain signals. They recommended using the long-term holder supply change as one input among others when assessing market strength.
