Long-dormant Bitcoin wallets move $40M in one week
Bitcoin addresses inactive for over 10 years transferred about $40 million in a seven-day period, with funds sent to exchange-linked and newly created wallets, on-chain trackers report.
On-chain tracking data show Bitcoin addresses dormant for more than ten years moved roughly $40 million in Bitcoin during a seven-day span.
Some funds were routed to addresses linked to cryptocurrency exchanges. Other transfers went to newly created wallets. Transaction sizes varied, with some addresses moving small fractions and others transferring larger allocations.
Addresses inactive for a decade or more are often associated with early miners, long-term holders and individuals who acquired bitcoin in the network’s early years. Several of the reactivated addresses were created in Bitcoin’s early years and had no outgoing transactions until the recent week.
Tracking firms observed a pattern in many transactions: partial amounts sent to exchange-linked addresses while the remainder moved to different wallets. Firms described those patterns as matching behaviors seen in liquidations, custody or estate transfers.
The Bitcoin ledger records flows and timestamps but does not reveal the identities of the parties controlling addresses. Analysts monitoring the activity noted that moving coins to exchange-controlled addresses can raise available supply on exchanges and may affect short-term market liquidity depending on whether the coins are sold.
The week of activity followed a period of generally elevated on-chain movement. Similar reactivations from long-idle addresses have occurred episodically in past years after legal developments, estate settlements, security recoveries or changes in market prices.
