Ireland seizes $38m in Bitcoin after lost fishing rod found

Irish authorities transferred about $38 million in Bitcoin after tracing funds to a hardware device hidden inside a lost fishing rod tied to suspected drug proceeds.

Irish authorities transferred about $38 million in Bitcoin to state-controlled wallets after tracing the cryptocurrency to a suspected drug dealer. The recovery began when a lost fishing rod was found to contain a small hardware device that led to wallet access, officials confirmed.

Investigators from the Gardaí and the Criminal Assets Bureau used blockchain analysis to identify the addresses holding the funds. Prosecutors linked the addresses to proceeds from drug trafficking and obtained a court order to seize the assets.

The hardware device inside the fishing rod allowed the finder, and then law enforcement, to locate private keys and the associated wallet addresses. After the court order, the Bitcoin was moved into wallets under state control pending further legal action.

Authorities declined to disclose the technical steps used in the transfer, and noted measures were taken to preserve evidence and to document the chain of custody for the cryptocurrency. The $38 million figure reflects the cryptocurrency’s market value at the time of transfer.

The Gardaí issued a statement: ‘Investigators worked closely with prosecutors to ensure the legal standard for seizure was met and that the assets would remain secured while courts consider the next steps.’ The force did not identify the accused or the location where the fishing rod was recovered because the investigation is ongoing.

Hardware wallets store private keys offline but can be exposed if a device is lost or a seed phrase is revealed. Law enforcement agencies increasingly combine traditional investigative work with blockchain tracing tools and cooperation from exchanges to follow funds on public ledgers.

Legal proceedings will determine whether the assets are forfeited and how they will be distributed under proceeds of crime legislation. The case remains subject to court decisions and any legal challenges by the accused.
