ICE picks tZERO to run 24/7 tokenized stock venue
Intercontinental Exchange selected tZERO to run a 24/7 trading venue for tokenized shares, enabling round-the-clock matching and on-chain settlement while following securities rules.
Intercontinental Exchange announced it selected tZERO to operate a trading venue that will list and execute trades in tokenized shares outside standard market hours. The venue is planned to run continuously and will use token technology to match orders and transfer ownership of blockchain-based representations of equity.
Under the agreement, tZERO will manage the platform and the supporting technology stack, including token issuance, custody connectivity and trade execution. Market participants trading on the venue will remain subject to existing securities laws, broker-dealer rules and anti-money-laundering requirements.
The venue is expected to rely on on-chain settlement processes that can reduce the time between execution and final transfer of ownership compared with traditional settlement cycles. The platform will implement know-your-customer checks, accredited investor validations where applicable, and links with custodians and clearing firms to meet custody and settlement needs.
Firms and custodial partners must connect their order routing and custody systems to tZERO to enable order flow and custody of tokenized positions. The design combines features of regulated trading systems, such as trade surveillance and recordkeeping, with token-based settlement rails that support continuous access to liquidity.
The announcement follows multiple tokenization projects across capital markets and crypto services focusing on equities, fixed income and other assets. Supporters cite fractional ownership and extended trading hours as potential benefits, while critics point to legal and operational questions including cross-border rules, investor protections and interoperability with existing clearing systems.
tZERO was founded to build regulated marketplaces and settlement systems for digital securities and has developed trading and settlement products for tokenized assets. Intercontinental Exchange operates major exchanges and market infrastructure globally and has expanded into digital-asset services including custody and trading infrastructure.
Both companies will need to obtain any regulatory approvals required for a continuous trading venue that lists tokenized shares and to establish links with banks, custodians and brokers to support fiat on-ramps, custody and compliance controls. The firms did not disclose a launch date or the identity of the first issuers of tokenized shares.
