Huang says OpenAI’s GPT-6 Astra ‘AGI has arrived’

NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang posted that OpenAI’s GPT-6 Astra was trained on about 100,000 Grace Blackwell NVLink72 boxes, declared “AGI has arrived” and said another 400,000 GPUs will come online.

On Sunday Jensen Huang wrote on X that OpenAI’s newest model, GPT-6 Astra, was trained on “~100K+ NVIDIA Grace Blackwell NVLink72” systems and added the message, “AGI has arrived. Congratulations @OpenAI team.” He also posted that another 400,000 GPUs will be turned on soon. Huang initially posted a larger figure of 300,000 boxes, deleted that post and then reposted the lower number; NVIDIA has not provided an explanation for the change.

OpenAI has not characterized GPT-6 Astra as artificial general intelligence. Company leaders have avoided calling any current model AGI, and OpenAI has not confirmed the scale of its chip purchases. A previously announced $100 billion partnership between NVIDIA and OpenAI from 2025 was not finalized.

The Grace Blackwell NVLink72 design places 72 processors in a single enclosure with high-speed links so the units operate together as one large compute block. NVIDIA moved from earlier board-level designs to these denser boxes after investing heavily in hardware and interconnect changes. NVIDIA executives say that the architecture delivers value primarily when used to train very large models; Huang’s post presents GPT-6 Astra as such a model.

NVIDIA reported about $89 billion in AI-computer sales in a recent three-month period, more than double the same quarter a year earlier. On an earnings call Huang linked the company’s revenue surge to demand for its AI systems, stating, “Now, compute is revenue.”

Observers are likely to track the machine counts, power consumption and the details of training runs that Huang referenced. The claim that 100,000 Grace Blackwell NVLink72 systems trained a single model, and the promise of 400,000 more GPUs coming online, can be checked against future inventory and production reports.

Experts remain divided on what qualifies as AGI and on when such a capability would be reached. Huang’s public statements and the hardware figures he posted have prompted attention from investors, customers and regulators, while OpenAI has declined to adopt the AGI label for GPT-6 Astra.
