Ethereum identity crisis: researcher says ETH lacks value story
Ansgar Dietrichs acknowledged ether lacks a clear value story after five years below $5,000. Ethlabs, launched June 22, will research ETH’s economic and technical functions.
Ansgar Dietrichs, a former Ethereum Foundation researcher now at Ethlabs, acknowledged on a podcast that ether still lacks a clear value story after five years below $5,000.
Ethlabs launched on June 22. The lab was founded by five former Foundation researchers and is backed by treasury firms Bitmine and Sharplink and by Consensys founder Joe Lubin. Ethlabs says it will clarify ether’s intended economic and technical functions.
The remarks come as the Ethereum Foundation undergoes organizational change. Co-founder Vitalik Buterin announced the foundation will shrink, reduce ETH sales and refocus on censorship resistance, privacy and open infrastructure. The foundation holds about 0.16% of all ether. Buterin has disclosed that almost 90% of his personal net worth remains in ether.
Onchain data show more than 32% of ether’s supply, roughly 39.5 million ETH, is locked in staking. Balances held on exchanges have been shrinking, reducing the amount of ether readily available to trade, according to analytics firm Cryptoquant.
Cryptoquant warned that when speculative sentiment is low while organic supply is absorbed into staking, the environment can be fragile for short-sellers. The firm described an ‘adoption paradox’ in which Ethereum has posted record daily active addresses and smart-contract activity while the token’s price sits more than 50% below its cycle peak.
Analysts say shrinking tradable supply can increase the risk that rapid buying forces bearish traders to cover positions, amplifying upward moves. Ethlabs and other groups intend to set clearer roles for ether; how these efforts affect investor conviction and price will take time to become clear.
