Ethereum EIP-8141 could bundle 64 actions into one transaction
Vitalik Buterin published EIP-8141 to change wallet signing, batching and fee payment. It would let one transaction include up to 64 ordered steps and add key rotation, paymasters and P256.
Vitalik Buterin published an updated Ethereum Improvement Proposal, EIP-8141, on Sunday. The draft would change how wallets sign, batch and pay for transactions and is intended to be part of the Hegotá upgrade. It would allow a single transaction to contain up to 64 ordered steps and add key rotation, paymasters and P256 signature support.
The proposal defines a new transaction format called a frame transaction. A frame can include up to 64 actions in a fixed sequence. The entire batch resolves as a single unit: if any step fails, the whole frame fails. The all-or-nothing rule is designed to prevent situations where a token approval succeeds but the intended swap or follow-up action does not, allowing approving and swapping to complete in one confirmation.
EIP-8141 also changes account key management. An account could be detached from its original private key so wallets can rotate keys or restore access using a second device or a trusted contact. The private key would remain recorded on-chain, but users would not have to depend solely on a static 12-word seed phrase as their only backup method.
On fees, the draft formalizes paymasters, which let third parties pay a user’s gas costs. Paymasters would allow applications to cover transaction fees for new users, enabling interactions with decentralized apps before users buy Ether. Developers could treat those fees as a customer acquisition expense.
The proposal adds support for P256 signatures, the elliptic-curve scheme used by many passkeys and mobile security chips. The authors describe P256 as an interim step on the path to post-quantum cryptography rather than a final quantum-resistant solution.
Buterin has written about these ideas earlier in the year, including a broader wallet overhaul in March and a lean roadmap for Ethereum in July. In a social post he wrote: ‘One positive consequence of all the recent detailed thinking about transaction formats … is that we have a much more explicit understanding of how transactions have…’
Client teams have not set an activation date for Hegotá. Development and testing work is ongoing. A separate change, the Glamsterdam gas limit increase, is expected to arrive in the fourth quarter of 2026. Market data showed Ether trading near $2,512 on Sunday, about 49% higher over the prior 90 days.
If adopted, EIP-8141 would change how wallets, backend services and decentralized applications handle signatures, fee payments and multi-step flows. The proposal must move through the community review and client implementation process before any activation decision is made.
