Ether Liquidations Top Bitcoin’s Despite Smaller Market Value
Ether positions worth $345 million were liquidated in 24 hours, topping Bitcoin’s $262 million as total crypto liquidations reached $1.09 billion.
Ether positions worth about $345 million were liquidated during a late-Thursday sell-off, compared with $262 million in Bitcoin positions. Ether’s market value is less than one-fifth of Bitcoin’s. Total cryptocurrency liquidations reached $1.09 billion, with more than $940 million coming from long positions, which profit when prices rise.
Liquidation data showed that 181,262 traders were affected. The largest single liquidation was an Ether position worth nearly $20 million on Hyperliquid, a decentralized exchange for perpetual futures contracts. Ether fell about 3% to near $2,490, while Bitcoin declined roughly 1% to around $82,400.
Ether’s liquidations were larger relative to its market value. About $345 million in forced selling against a market capitalization of roughly $295 billion equaled more than $1 million in liquidations for every $1 billion of market value. Bitcoin recorded about $262 million in liquidations against a market capitalization above $1.6 trillion, or about $160,000 per $1 billion.
The figures followed a week in which Bitcoin traded between roughly $83,000 and $87,000. Liquidations occur when exchanges automatically close leveraged positions after losses use up a trader’s collateral. The resulting sales can put further pressure on prices.
Federal Reserve minutes released Thursday indicated that most officials expected another interest-rate increase before the end of the year. Oil prices rose after a report that the Pentagon was preparing for renewed combat in Iran. Ethereum researcher Justin Drake also warned that artificial intelligence could threaten the cryptography used to protect wallet keys sooner than expected.
Bitcoin’s decline below $83,000 preceded a broader market sell-off. The cryptocurrency later recovered toward $82,200 after President Donald Trump said the United States would not strike Iran before the midterm elections. Short positions accounted for about 78% of the roughly $25 million liquidated during the following four hours.
Ether remained near $2,490 after the recovery, below the levels where outflows from Ether exchange-traded funds had begun to accelerate. The largest concentration of Ether long liquidations was near $2,450.
The sell-off came one day before the anniversary of Oct. 10, 2025, when cryptocurrency liquidations reached a record $19 billion in one day. Thursday’s total was about one-sixteenth of that amount.
