Dutch prosecutors sell $2.5M in crypto seized from Knaken

Dutch prosecutors sold $2.5 million in cryptocurrency seized from bankrupt Dutch platform Knaken as part of ongoing legal and insolvency proceedings.

Dutch prosecutors recently sold $2.5 million worth of cryptocurrency that had been seized from the bankrupt Netherlands-based crypto platform Knaken. The sale took place as part of continuing legal and insolvency procedures tied to the platform’s collapse.

The digital assets were seized after Knaken filed for bankruptcy. Prosecutors converted the holdings into cash to preserve value and to facilitate eventual distribution to creditors or for court-ordered restitution.

The transaction was handled by the Dutch Public Prosecution Service, which oversees seized assets during criminal investigations and insolvency processes. Officials did not disclose which tokens were sold or the identity of the buyer.

Proceeds from the sale will remain in the control of the relevant legal authorities pending further legal steps, including creditor claims and any orders from the court. The $2.5 million amount reflects the value at the time of sale and may change with market fluctuations.

Knaken’s bankruptcy left customer funds and company assets subject to legal review and investigation. Prosecutors moved to secure and liquidate assets that are connected to those proceedings or needed to satisfy claims against the bankruptcy estate.

Handling digital assets in bankruptcy cases presents legal and operational challenges, such as determining ownership, establishing the market value at the time of sale, and providing transparent accounting for creditors. Dutch authorities have been refining procedures to apply traditional bankruptcy and seizure rules to cryptocurrency while accounting for technical features of digital tokens.

No public statement from Knaken’s former management was available at the time of the sale, and prosecutors offered limited public comment. The funds will remain with legal authorities until courts rule on distribution to creditors or other claimants.
