David Schwartz Warns of Fake Airdrops Targeting XRP Ledger
Ripple CTO Emeritus David Schwartz warned May 13 that fake airdrops and impersonators on Instagram, Telegram and other social platforms are targeting XRP Ledger users.
On May 13, Ripple CTO Emeritus David Schwartz warned XRP Ledger users about a sharp rise in fake airdrops and impersonators operating on Instagram, Telegram and other social platforms. He urged anyone who sees posts claiming to represent him or offering unsolicited rewards to treat them as likely scams.
Schwartz wrote that many schemes rely on cloned profiles, familiar executive names and fabricated event claims to win trust. Fraudsters often post links or send direct messages that lead to websites designed to collect login details or prompt wallet connections that can enable unauthorized access.
Recent alerts tied to the XRP ecosystem describe multiple related tactics: phishing requests for fake verification, malicious wallet prompts asking for private recovery data, hijacked video channels and cloned livestreams, and accounts posing as official support. Scammers frequently copy community language and branding to make offers appear legitimate.
Schwartz posted: “SCAM ALERT: There has been a huge escalation lately in airdrop and giveaway scams targeting XRPL users lately.” He followed with a second warning: “Anyone claiming to be me on Instagram, Telegram, or almost anywhere else is likely a scammer. Stay safe XRP fam.”
The advisory notes that unsolicited airdrops, direct messages and unexpected reward offers delivered through unofficial channels can lead to credential theft or immediate loss of funds if a malicious site or prompt gains wallet access. The message urged community and platform moderators to watch for copied profiles and fake announcements and to alert users when impersonation campaigns appear.
