Darknet Figure Signals Cooperation in $44M Bitcoin Case

Tomáš Jiříkovský, a jailed Czech programmer accused of operating darknet marketplaces and laundering criminal proceeds, told prosecutors he may cooperate in the investigation of a $44 million bitcoin donation to the Ministry of Justice. At a custody hearing at the Brno Municipal Court, Judge Ivana Otrubová ruled that he must remain detained, citing risk of flight and concern that he still controls undisclosed cryptocurrency.

Prosecutor Lucie Šlamová told the court that the defendant “has taken certain steps and changed his position regarding the operation of the darknet marketplace and the laundering of criminal proceeds.” She added that Jiříkovský “did not provide detailed testimony, but he indicated the possibility of cooperation.” Prosecutors intend to develop any cooperation into usable testimony and corroborating evidence.

Authorities allege Jiříkovský offered 30% of a seized cryptocurrency wallet to state authorities in return for assistance unlocking it. That arrangement resulted in a $44 million bitcoin payment to the Justice Ministry. The transfer sparked political fallout, including the resignation of former Justice Minister Pavel Blažek and criminal charges against several high-ranking officials for alleged facilitation of money laundering and breaches of office.

In filings, prosecutors have sought prison terms of up to 20 years in the wider laundering case and have requested a nine-year sentence tied specifically to the donation episode. Court documents refer to a possible 6.5-year sentence for Blažek related to his role in accepting the funds.

Investigators have compiled files running to tens of thousands of pages as they trace cryptocurrency flows and alleged laundering networks. The court cited the volume of material and concerns that parts of the crypto assets remain under Jiříkovský’s control when deciding to extend detention. Defence lawyers had argued for less restrictive measures, pointing to favorable procedural rulings from the Constitutional Court, but the judge found detention necessary while inquiries continue.

Trial proceedings before Judge Otrubová are expected to be lengthy as courts and investigators try to map wallet movements, establish links to darknet platforms and determine who profited from the alleged laundering. Prosecutors have indicated they will pursue both criminal penalties and confiscation of assets connected to the case.
