Coinbase to launch tokenized stocks and options trading

Coinbase will offer 1:1-backed tokenized stocks with automatic dividend payouts and add options trading for crypto and traditional equities in the coming months.

Coinbase announced plans to launch tokenized stock trading that uses on-chain tokens backed one-for-one by underlying shares and will automatically pass dividend payments to token holders. The company also said it will add options trading for cryptocurrencies and traditional equities in the coming months.

The tokenized stock product will let customers transfer existing stock holdings onto Coinbase and trade them on the platform. Coinbase’s chief executive, Brian Armstrong, posted on X that the company intends the tokens to represent actual, one-for-one ownership of shares on-chain.

Options trading for crypto assets and conventional equities is scheduled to begin in the coming months as Coinbase expands its derivatives suite. The exchange has already introduced pre-IPO perpetual contracts and in May received approval to offer crypto perpetual futures in the U.S.

Other new features include the ability to borrow against staked Solana, providing liquidity without unstaking tokens. Coinbase said its Coinbase One Card will add a travel portal powered by Rocket Travel by Agoda that gives 5% back in Bitcoin on purchases made through the portal, up from the card’s usual 2–4% rewards. The card will also be usable with USDC backing to broaden access for customers who lack an approved credit record.

Coinbase pointed to a recent mortgage product that allowed a Michigan couple to close a Fannie Mae-backed home loan after using Bitcoin as collateral for their down payment. The mortgage product, announced in March, is being rolled out in partnership with mortgage lender Better.

The company described additional updates including time-based crypto price prediction contracts, instant access to new token launches on Solana and Base, and new transfer controls intended to strengthen account security. Coinbase said it is testing tools that allow AI agents to execute trades and transfers on a user’s behalf and continues to expand custody and trading features so customers can hold, spend, trade, invest and borrow from a single account.

Ben Shen, Coinbase’s head of financial services, described the product slate as focused on “economic empowerment,” saying the goal is to let customers “use money in their everyday lives, the way they want.” Coinbase said crypto traders and investors remain its primary customers as it builds out broader banking and trading functions.

The firm did not provide specific launch dates for all features. Options trading and tokenized stocks are expected to roll out in the coming months, with other services being phased in or already available to some users.
