Coinbase Opens 170+ Derivatives to UK Professional Investors
Eligible UK professional investors can trade more than 170 futures, perpetuals and crypto options on Coinbase, covering crypto, commodities, equities and FX, with perpetuals up to 50x leverage.
Coinbase has opened access to more than 170 derivatives contracts for eligible UK professional investors, offering futures, perpetuals and crypto options across crypto, commodities, equities and foreign exchange. The contracts will be rolled out progressively over the coming weeks and months and are available under CB Payments Ltd.’s UK investment-services permission. Initial participation is limited to qualifying professional clients while onboarding for different instrument types continues.
Perpetual contracts on the platform have no set expiry and provide continuous market exposure. They allow long, short and delta-neutral strategies and offer leverage up to 50x for clients who meet the exchange’s eligibility requirements. Dated futures carry fixed settlement dates and provide maximum leverage of up to 20x for commodity and financial contracts. For dated futures, cost of carry is priced into the contract at execution rather than collected through ongoing funding rates.
Crypto options will be offered for single-leg and multi-leg strategies, including calls, puts and spreads. Options give buyers the right but not the obligation to buy or sell under specified terms. All leveraged derivatives increase both potential gains and potential losses for traders.
Many of the new contracts will trade 24/7. The company noted that global crypto derivatives trading volume routinely reaches about 4.4 times the volume of crypto spot markets. Coinbase has previously offered 24/7 stock perpetuals to eligible traders outside the U.S., providing synthetic exposure to U.S. equities through leveraged contracts.
The derivatives offering follows a July approval that extended Coinbase’s ability to offer regulated financial instruments alongside its crypto services. The derivatives permission operates through CB Payments Ltd.’s investment-services authorization and is separate from the UK crypto regime scheduled to take effect on Oct. 25, 2027. The Financial Conduct Authority has set requirements for firms in that regime covering financial resilience, capital and stress testing, market integrity and stablecoin rules.
Company materials list additional products planned for professional clients, including pre-IPO perpetuals, stock options and tokenized stocks. Availability of specific contracts will expand as users and instruments are onboarded.
Keith Grose, head of Coinbase UK, wrote in a company blog post: “Eligible investors can trade over 170 contracts across crypto, commodities, equities, and FX 24/7 with up to 50x leverage.”
