Coinbase will provide USDC payment APIs, liquidity and regulated custody while Nium settles payouts into local currencies for clients in more than 190 countries.

Coinbase has partnered with payments infrastructure provider Nium to enable USD Coin (USDC) payouts and local-currency settlement for Nium clients across more than 190 countries. Nium announced the integration on April 21 and Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong highlighted it on April 26.

Under the arrangement, businesses on Nium’s network can fund payouts in USDC onchain and have those stablecoins converted into local fiat for final settlement. Coinbase will supply stablecoin payment APIs, liquidity services, wallet infrastructure and regulated custody. Nium will route payouts through its global payments network, which operates under more than 40 licenses.

Nium described the setup as live and available to clients immediately after the announcement. Companies using the combined service can send and receive USDC onchain and settle into local currencies through Nium’s existing rails, with Coinbase managing stablecoin infrastructure and custody for the flows routed by Nium.

Nium wrote that the integration removes the need for customers to manage stablecoin liquidity, onramps and wallet operations separately. The company also said businesses are increasing their use of stablecoins for treasury operations and cross-border payouts where predictable settlement values and faster clearing are priorities. Brian Armstrong wrote on X: “We’re unlocking stablecoin payments around the world. Nium operates in 190+ countries. All their customers can fund payouts in USDC and settle to their local currencies, with no wire delays.” Nium added in its announcement: “The integration with Coinbase solves the complexity of managing stablecoin payments, liquidity, onramps, wallet infrastructure, and regulation independently.”

USDC is a dollar-pegged stablecoin issued by Circle and is used for payments, trading and treasury functions. Coinbase is a U.S.-based crypto exchange and custody provider listed on Nasdaq under the COIN ticker. A Coinbase review can help users compare the platform’s spot trading fees, spreads, deposit methods, withdrawal costs, asset coverage, and custody features. Nium is a payments infrastructure firm that provides real-time cross-border transfers and corporate payouts. The partnership extends Nium’s fiat payout capabilities by adding onchain settlement rails through Coinbase.
