Coinbase Trading, Transfers Disrupted by AWS US-EAST-1 Outage
Users faced hours-long outages to trading, fund transfers and the mobile app Thursday night after failures in AWS’s US-EAST-1 availability zones affected Coinbase core trading systems.
Coinbase users experienced hours-long outages to trading, fund transfers and the mobile app Thursday night after failures in Amazon Web Services’ US-EAST-1 availability zones disrupted the exchange’s core trading systems.
Downdetector reports rose around 6 p.m. ET, and Coinbase’s monitoring detected elevated error rates across multiple services about 8 p.m. ET. The company traced the issue to failures in AWS Availability Zone use1-az4 in the US-EAST-1 region.
Coinbase wrote that the problem affected multiple availability zones, exceeding its design assumption that systems would recover from a single-zone failure. The company described the incident as an “extended outage” of core trading services while AWS worked to restore temperature controls and other managed services that support its infrastructure.
Users reported problems accessing the Coinbase app, moving funds and executing trades. Downdetector’s breakdown of reports during the outage showed roughly one-third related to fund transfers, one-third to trading and about 29% to the mobile app.
Coinbase reported the primary issue had been resolved and directed customers with account questions to Coinbase Support. The company wrote its team will conduct a full analysis and that findings may change as AWS publishes its post-incident report.
Amazon declined to comment and pointed users to its Service Health Dashboard.
The disruption follows an October outage tied to AWS that temporarily knocked Coinbase and other brokerages offline and prevented some users from accessing accounts or completing trades.
Coinbase has increased its use of cloud services while expanding into cloud-based AI and stablecoin infrastructure. CEO Brian Armstrong wrote on X, “AI is bringing a profound shift in how companies operate, and we’re reshaping Coinbase to lead in this new era.”
