CFTC approves Coinbase’s US derivatives clearinghouse

The CFTC approved Coinbase Clearing LLC as a U.S. derivatives clearinghouse, letting it clear fully collateralized futures, options on futures and swaps but not leveraged products.

The Commodity Futures Trading Commission approved Coinbase Clearing LLC as a U.S. derivatives clearing organization, and the registration became effective Monday. The approval permits the clearinghouse to clear fully collateralized futures, options on futures and swaps. The registration specifically does not allow clearing of leveraged derivatives.

The registration allows Coinbase to operate a U.S.-based clearing facility alongside its existing futures broker, Coinbase Financial Markets Inc., and its exchange, Coinbase Derivatives LLC. Coinbase stated the clearinghouse will support settlement in USDC and operate around the clock.

A derivatives clearing organization serves as the central counterparty in trades. The clearinghouse will handle margining, guarantee performance if a party defaults and coordinate the final transfer of funds and positions. Fully collateralized products must be backed by posted collateral rather than financed leverage.

Coinbase currently lists U.S.-regulated futures tied to Bitcoin and Ether, along with commodity and equity-index futures, and offers long-dated, perpetual-style crypto futures. With the new clearing entity, those products can be settled through a Coinbase-controlled clearing facility.

Other crypto firms have also gained CFTC-regulated clearing capabilities. In May, Payward, the parent company of Kraken, acquired Bitnomial and its CFTC-regulated exchange, clearinghouse and futures brokerage.

As a registered derivatives clearing organization, Coinbase Clearing LLC will be subject to CFTC rules on risk management, participant supervision and operational resilience. The clearinghouse must maintain adequate financial resources, run default management procedures and comply with reporting and audit requirements intended to protect market integrity and reduce systemic risk.

Molly Abraham, Coinbase’s general counsel, commented: “Today’s CFTC approval completes Coinbase’s end-to-end derivatives infrastructure, enabling us to bring more regulated derivatives products to market with native USDC collateral and 24/7 settlement.”

The CFTC registration authorizes clearing of specific fully collateralized derivative types under U.S. law and does not change the list of products Coinbase may list on its exchange.
