Cathie Wood Puts $1.3B of ARK Holdings On Blockchain

Cathie Wood’s ARK converted about $1.3 billion of fund holdings, including stakes in SpaceX and OpenAI, into blockchain-recorded tokens to register ownership digitally.

Cathie Wood’s ARK Invest converted about $1.3 billion of holdings from its funds and ETFs into blockchain-recorded tokens, including exposures to SpaceX and OpenAI. The transfer was completed recently and moved fund interests from conventional records to a public distributed ledger.

ARK created tokenized representations of portions of assets held across its funds. The tokens record claims on the funds’ positions in digital form. The assets affected were already inside ARK-managed vehicles; no new purchases or sales of the underlying companies were reported.

The tokens are designed to be transferable and settle on-chain, allowing faster movement of claims than traditional fund-share transfers. They represent entitlements tied to the funds’ portfolios rather than direct ownership of private-company shares.

For private stakes such as SpaceX and OpenAI, token holders receive a digital claim linked to ARK’s funds. The process does not convert private shares into public stock and does not change the companies’ capital structures.

On-chain records can enable 24/7 transfers and, where platforms and rules permit, potential secondary-market trading. Continuous token markets can provide more frequent price information than periodic net asset value updates if trading is allowed.

The blockchain ledger stores transfer history and token balances, adding a digital record of transactions. Market participants and regulators will assess how tokenized fund claims align with securities rules, custody arrangements and anti-money-laundering controls.

Legal and operational structures generally stay in place when funds create tokenized instruments. Custody arrangements, investor rights and fund compliance are typically maintained through contractual and regulatory wrappers tied to the tokens.

ARK Invest is led by founder and CEO Cathie Wood and is known for ETFs focused on disruptive technologies and earlier cryptocurrency exposure. The firm has previously explored blockchain applications for asset management and has now placed a significant portion of fund holdings into on-chain representations.
