Buffett, Bezos Cite Clear Writing and Speech for Career Gains

Warren Buffett and Jeff Bezos emphasized clear speaking and writing as tools that affect career outcomes. Buffett called communication “extremely important” as he prepared to hand over leadership in late 2025. Bezos requires six‑page narrative memos at Amazon to focus analysis and document assumptions.

Buffett recalled overcoming public‑speaking fear in his twenties by taking a course and urged ongoing practice in how people explain ideas. He said schools can miss practical instruction in speaking and writing and encouraged younger professionals to study effective communicators and practice explaining the why, the how and the trade‑offs without jargon.

Inside Amazon, Bezos set written narrative as the default for meetings. New hires learn to prepare structured memos instead of slide decks, and meetings often begin with quiet reading so the written argument stands on its own. The six‑page requirement is intended to expose gaps in logic, force teams to state assumptions, cite data and anticipate objections, and to create a record that helps compare options later.

Buffett has long recommended hiring people with intelligence, integrity and energy and warned against selecting candidates in the hope their core character will change. He cited his partnership with Charlie Munger, from 1978 to 2023, as an example of sustained collaboration built on shared standards and clear exchange of ideas.

Executives at Amazon report that narrative memos help scale decisions across many teams and reduce choices based on presentation alone. Buffett described clear speech and writing as ways to make reasoning durable when audiences are silent and to allow ideas to be weighed on their merits.
