Blockstream disputes $6.7M River lawsuit, cites name confusion

Blockstream filed a legal response to a $6.7 million lawsuit brought by River, denying liability and arguing the claim results from confusion between separate companies with similar names.

River sought $6.7 million in losses in a complaint filed earlier this year. In its court answer, Blockstream disputed the factual and legal bases of those demands and asked the court to dismiss claims it says rest on inaccurate attributions.

The filing states that River’s allegations do not connect Blockstream to the conduct at issue. Blockstream offered corporate records and other documentation intended to show separate corporate structures, distinct product lines and different market positions.

Blockstream argued that any misunderstanding stems from similarity in names and branding among unrelated entities and that River’s theory would place liability on firms not involved in the activities described in the complaint.

Neither filing included a public settlement offer. Both companies indicated they intend to pursue legal remedies. The case will move through standard pretrial procedures as the court evaluates motions and evidence; the filings did not specify a court schedule or upcoming hearings.

Blockstream provides Bitcoin infrastructure and related technologies. River offers brokerage and custody services to individual and institutional clients. Both operate in the cryptocurrency sector, where corporate names and branding can affect commercial relationships.

The resolution will depend on the court’s assessment of whether River has shown a sufficient connection between the alleged harms and Blockstream’s conduct and whether any confusion among companies is material to the legal claims.
