Bitcoin reclaims $79,000; open interest hits $140B

Bitcoin reclaimed $79,000 on Tuesday after a mid-morning low of $78,600; futures open interest rose to about $140.9 billion and 24-hour liquidations jumped roughly 128%.

On Tuesday, Aug. 25, 2026, bitcoin rose back above $79,000 after dipping to $78,600 earlier in the session. Futures open interest reached about $140.9 billion, and 24-hour liquidations increased roughly 128%.

The intraday swing followed a peak at $81,255, the highest level since May 11. On-chain data showed larger holders sold about $2 billion worth of BTC during the decline to the mid-morning low.

The Crypto Fear and Greed Index registered 74, a reading market participants interpret as continued bullish sentiment and routine consolidation rather than a broad market unwind. Derivatives data showed elevated leverage, with open interest near $140.9 billion.

Order-book analysis identified a cluster of short positions above current prices and a concentration of long orders between $77,300 and $78,000. That structure presents two potential liquidation pathways: reclaiming the short-heavy zone could trigger short-position buybacks, while a drop below the long-pocket band could lead to cascading long liquidations.

The surge in 24-hour liquidations reflected a wave of leveraged positions closed as margin requirements were met. High open interest combined with rapid liquidations coincided with the larger intraday price swings.

In a post on X, market commentator Aria Naka wrote, “The current setup is interesting because the market is again approaching a critical psychological zone. A sustained reclaim above the recent resistance structure could confirm a higher low and reopen the path toward the previous major highs. Failure to hold the recovery zone would instead expose deeper support and potentially reset sentiment once again.”

At 12:45 p.m. EST, bitcoin was trading around $79,000. Concentrated orders, heavy open interest and recent liquidations were present in the market as participants adjusted positions.
