Bitcoin holds near $82.5K as Ledger theft reports emerge

Bitcoin held near $82,500 on Friday after recovering from $80,350, while crypto markets showed limited selling following reports of stolen funds from Ledger users.

Bitcoin recovered from a low of $80,350 to reclaim $83,000 around the Wall Street open on Friday. BTC/USD later traded near $82,500, while rolling 24-hour crypto liquidations exceeded $1 billion.

Exchange order-book data showed selling orders building around $84,000, which traders were watching as a potential resistance level. The $82,500 area has provided support since mid-September and remained a focus ahead of the weekly close.

Ledger acknowledged reports of stolen funds in a post on X and linked the claims to CryptoBillis, a reseller based in Southeast Asia. The company advised users who had set up their devices to consider moving their assets to a new Ledger signer created with a new seed.

Crypto markets did not show broad selling after the reports. Hardware wallets have faced increased security scrutiny in recent months, including after manufacturer Coldcard reported a multi-phase hack in July and August.

U.S. stocks opened higher on Friday, with technology shares recovering from losses earlier in the week. The Nasdaq Composite had faced pressure after weaker-than-expected earnings projections from OpenAI. Crypto traders continued to monitor whether broader market sentiment would affect Bitcoin.

Bitfinex Alpha, the research arm of crypto exchange Bitfinex, expects Bitcoin to trade between $81,300 and $86,500 ahead of the U.S. consumer price index report scheduled for Oct. 14. “Our primary outlook anticipates range-bound consolidation between $81,300 and $86,500 heading into the 14 October U.S. CPI data, with repeated retests of $84,000,” the research group wrote in a blog post.
